Admiral Extend (BETA) Implementation Guide
In This Guide We Will Walk Through How To Extend User Sessions And Increase Pageviews And Revenue With Admiral Extend (Beta).
What is Admiral Extend?
Admiral Extend enables publishers to engage visitors at the moment they are most likely to leave the site, automatically surfacing the best next piece of content to maximize each visitor’s session depth, time on site, and monetizable pageviews.
- Advanced exit recovery targeting: Target the right users, on the right pages, just as they’re most at risk of exiting (e.g. visitor moves their cursor up towards address bar / back button, visitor returns from being idle, or visitor scrolls to the bottom of an article).
- AI-powered and automated: AI A/B testing and content analysis automatically optimizes messaging to surface the best next article to retain each visitor.
- Exit recovery insights: Estimate revenue lost to unmitigated exits and track performance to optimize Extend.
This implementation requires minimal development effort
Extend is designed to be zero dev lift beyond the standard Admiral platform tag. However, publishers should ensure:
- Admiral tag is installed sitewide
- Ability to configure journeys and offers in the Admiral dashboard
How Extend Works
1. Detect Exit Signals
Extend monitors user behavior to identify when a visitor is likely to leave. Confogirable signals include:
- Cursor exiting the page (exit intent)
- On page time, inactivity, or idle behavior
- Reaching scroll thresholds (e.g., article completion)
2. Trigger Engagement
When an exit signal is detected, Admiral triggers a highly customizable, responsive journey engage. This can take the form of:
- Pop-up modal
- Small corner nudge
- Banner
- In-page inline unit
3. Recommend Content
The Extend Journey engage surfaces content using one or both of the following methods:
- AI-powered recommendations
- Uses Admiral Surge + Popular content analysis
- Automatically identifies high-performing or relevant articles not yet surfaced to the individual visitor
- Manual curation
- Editors may select specific high-value pages
- Useful for subscriptions, evergreen content, or monetization priorities
4. Track Performance
Extend provides insights into:
- Engagement rate (click-through on offers)
- Incremental pageviews generated
- Estimated revenue recovered from exits
- Session extension metrics
How to Configure Extend in Admiral
1. Create a Link Offer
- In the left sidebar of Admiral Dashboard, click into Offers.
- At the top-right of the Offers page, click Create Offer and select Link Offer.
Note: If Link Offer isn’t available within your Admiral Dashboard, contact your Admiral representative to be added to the Admiral Extend Beta. - Specify an Offer Name, Description, Offer Name Note, and Description Note.
- Choose whether you’d like your Extend journey to surface Surging articles (articles experiencing a very recent surge in popularity) and/or Popular articles (articles with the highest consistent pageview recently). You may also re-order them to set priority. You may choose one or both. Using both, with Surging listed first, is generally recommended. You may optionally specify a custom link to send visitors to.
2. Create a Journey
- In the left sidebar of Admiral Dashboard, click into Journeys.
- At the top-right of the Offers page, click Create Journey and select Create Journey from scratch.
- Name your journey (e.g. “Extend Journey”).
- At the top-right, click the kabob menu (three vertical dots) and select Edit Targeting.
- Click + Add Interaction Condition and select Exit Intent.
- You may optionally add additional interaction conditions, such as Time Idle and Scroll Depth to catch high exit probability visitors. You may also add targeting criteria to confine your Extend journey to certain visitors or pages.
- Click Save Targeting.
3. Customize your Engage
- On the Journey page, within the first engage listed in the timeline, click the kabob menu (three vertical dots) and select Edit.
- In the Actions tab, turn off all Offers except for the Link Offer you created during Step 1.
- You can choose to turn off ‘Show content preview’ if you wish to only present users with a simple button. Otherwise, an automatically generated article preview will be shown (thumbnail, title, description).
- You can use the Layout, Styles, Message, and Settings tabs to further customize your engage, including controlling where it appears, its size, styling, and footer links.
- When you’re finished, click Save at the top-right.
- Click the Edit button at the top-right of the journey timeline.
- Review the Limit and Frequency of your engage. Generally, a limit of 0 and Frequency of 2 Minutes is appropriate for an Extend Journey.
- Ensure that that Skip if any offer has been accepted is toggled off. This allows visitors who have extended their session previously to still be engaged in future visits.
4. Enable AI Optimization (Recommended)
- In the left sidebar of Admiral Dashboard, click into Journeys.
- At the top-right, click the pencil next to Automated Testing.
- Configure Automated Testing with a 10% (or higher) percentage.
